Holy Scrap

Holy Scrap is the name of a scrapbooking retreat that I went to last weekend. It was at a Bible Camp, and it was organized by some of the teachers in my school district. This was my second year at Holy Scrap, and I had a great time. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough pictures printed to be able to scrapbook. Fortunately, I did have lots of card supplies and ideas, so I spent the weekend making cards.
When we first got to the camp, we checked in at the room where we would spend the weekend being creative. We were all greeted by the sight of gorgeous paper flowers. Each one was on a wooden kabob skewer, and was stuck into an insulated cup. Each flower had a name on it, and that showed us where our place would be for the weekend. Here's my flower (back at my house).

We had several Make-And-Take projects to do over the weekend. Here is one - this card is so easy to make!

Just cut 4-5 strips of coordinating paper - make them 1 1/2 inches by 4 inches. Then cut them diagonally, corner to corner. Cut a piece of white paper 5 inches by 3.75 inches. Either score or mark the paper one inch from the bottom edge. Then score or mark down the middle, from the top to the first scoring mark.  Use the middle mark to place the first triangle, with the point at the 1 inch score mark, in the middle. Glue (or use tape runner) the triangles one by one across the card. Trim off the excess around the sides. Cut coordinating rectangle 5.25 inches by 4 inches. Glue white card with triangles to the colored rectangle. Fold cardstock for card (8.5 inches by 4.25 inches) in half. Glue colored rectangle piece to the top of the card.  Adhere a strip of Stampin' Up's sticky tape over the scoring mark one inch from the bottom and stick ribbon to the tape.  If you want to, you can stamp a message below the ribbon.

Here's the second Make-And-Take card. We used a Stampin' Up punch to make the flags, tied thin twine around the cardstock and draped flags over the twine. We did use some glue dots to keep the flags on the twine. So simple!

Here are some of the cards I made -

One other component of the weekend was the scrapbook challenge. Actually, there were several challenges over the course of the weekend. I missed the first one, which was to make a black and white layout.
The second challenge was to use a pair of decorative scissors in our project or layout. Here's the card I made for that challenge. Sorry for the quality of the picture - the card is actually white.

The last challenge was to look through scrapbooking/card making magazines to find inspiration and make a project/layout based on the inspiration piece.  I saw a trifold card idea, and made this card-

It was a great weekend. My hope is that next year my daughter will be able to go with me to the Holy Scrap weekend.

Holy Scrap, part 2

At the scrap booking retreat I was at last weekend, we had 3 challenges in addition to working on our own scrapbooks. The challenges were:
  1. Create a page and use baker's twine somewhere on the page.
  2. Since this was the 10th anniversary of Holy Scrap, we needed to create a page with exactly 10 elements.
  3. Pick a black and white picture from a pile, and create a page and story using the picture. Pretend that the person/people in the picture is someone you know.
The challenges were spread out throughout the weekend. Participation was not mandatory, but those who did had their names put in a bag and three were drawn to win prizes.

Here are my three challenge pages:

I used the baker's twine to "hang"  the pendants on this page.

My 10 elements were: sticker letters, black paper, purple paper, 2 pictures, a journaling die cut, 2 snowflakes and 2 puff balls for the snowflake centers.

I chose this picture of a boy playing a trumpet and his mom playing the piano.

I think everyone had the most fun with this third challenge, having fun and laughing at all the stories made up about the pictures.

Here are some of the pages I finished this weekend  for my cabin scrapbook:

(The owls were made with a Stampin' Up punch.)

(The banners and the flower-shaped picture were cut out with Stampin' Up die cuts)

(The leaves were made with a die cut from Sizzix)

(I used a 2" circle punch from Marvy)

I'm still a couple of years behind in my scrapbook - but I'm 18 pages closer to being caught up. My first scrap booking retreat was wonderful.

Holy Scrap Weekend

This weekend I went to my first scrap booking retreat. I have been scrap booking for many years, but since Craig was only home on the weekends, I was never able to go to a retreat.
Holy Scrap is a weekend retreat organized by a couple of women in northern MN, and they just happen to work with me. I am so glad that they invited me - and so thankful to God for this weekend. It was awesome!

When we arrived Friday night at Miracle Bible Camp, the room was all set up for us.  Each woman was assigned her own table. There was a special goodie bag, a piece of special paper and some die cut flowers, and a t-shirt waiting for each of us.

The t-shirt said, "Holy Scrap" on the front and has Psalm 102:18 on the back:

Let this be written for a future generation,
that a people not yet created may praise the Lord

I knew right then that it was going to be a great weekend. In addition to scrap booking, we also had three make-and-takes, three page challenges, time for snowshoeing, and time to get to know one another.

The three make-and-takes were:

A mini album made out of cardboard coasters

A card made from Stampin' Up die cuts

and coasters made out of ceramic tiles, paper, and Mod Podge.

Each time we came back to the work room there was some kind of treat waiting for each of us at our work station - almost like there was a scrap booking fairy there - a piece of paper, an embellishment, ribbon...even a cloth bracelet with the same Bible verse on it. It was so much fun.

Those of us who were there for the first time each got a flannel scarf.

This was the 10th anniversary for Holy Scrap, so Saturday night we had carrot cake cupcakes with candles in them. We took group pictures, shared ideas and supplies, had meals and devotions together, and worked on creating scrapbooks that would tell our stories, showcase our pictures, and save our memories.

I want to thank the ladies who organized the weekend, planned the events, bought the gifts, and made this a weekend to remember.

In my next blog I'll share some of the pages I made- I was able to finish 18 pages this weekend!
