Kitchen Remodel

We are in the beginning stages of remodeling our kitchen. The kitchen we currently have was great for when this was just our weekend cabin, but now that we're living here all the time, we need to make some changes. I loved the cabinets, which we picked out 15 years ago when we bought the cabin, but we have learned that we will not be able to re-use them for several reasons - the sizes aren't right for new appliances, the edges are rounded so they can't be added on to, and the doors have a very unique trim piece that would be hard to duplicate. We will "go green" by reusing these old cabinets in other places (laundry room, pantry, garage, etc).
So... it's time for new cabinets. For the past couple of weeks we have been poring through magazines, books, and websites for ideas.
My wish list is:
  1. a center island with a cooktop
  2. a wall oven
  3. a new refrigerator - preferably with the freezer on the bottom and french doors
  4. a bigger window
  5. more drawers than doors
  6. an undermount sink
Here are some of my inspiration pictures:

After spending most of yesterday shopping for kitchen appliances, and looking at cabinets in several different stores, as well as talking with a cabinet maker, we have made a few decisions.1) Even though I like the painted cabinets in these inspiration pictures, I think we're going to have our cabinets stained. I want to have the wall cabinets stained a very light, natural color but go with a darker, redder stain on the island. 2) We need to have beadboard somewhere on the cabinets. We are now talking about having beadboard as the backsplash for the wall cabinets, and beadboard on the island. 3) We are going to have the cabinets built and installed by a cabinet maker rather than trying to do it ourselves, even though it will probably cost a bit more. I just don't have the time to help Craig do the installation because of my job.

It's exciting to think about the new kitchen, but the number of decisions that still need to be made is almost overwhelming. So, we will just take it one step at a time, one decision at a time...
